Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon), or Chandra Tal, is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas. Mountains of scree overlook the lake on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. Situated in the Spiti part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India),Chandra Taal is a popular destination for trekkers and campers. Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are the camping sites. During springtime, these meadows are carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wild flowers. The lake is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau, which overlooks
the Chandra River.
Baralacha la means summit with cross roads from Spiti, Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahaul meet here and in ancient times it was part of a trade route. On the North West lies the Bhaga River while the Chandra flows South East. Near below the Baralacha la is having a beautiful emerald lake the Suraj tal (Sun lake), the source of the river Bhaga.

Trek through an alpine plateau, Dhundi (2480 m). Along the trek view glaciers and snow capped peaks including the peaks of Indrasan (6221 m) & Deo Tibba (6001 m). Overnight in tents at Bakarthach (3150 m).

Batal is situated at the foot of Kunzum Pass which provides the main approach to Spiti and Lahaul valley. The panorama as viewed from the top of the pass is enthralling and inspiring. On the way to Bara Shhingri glaciers the view of the Shhingri stream emerging from beneath a huge iridescent archway of solid ice is a never-to be forgotten sight. Behind the height. The glacier is mountainous mass of solid ice more the a kilometer wide and extending over the distance of ten kilometer. O/N Camp at Batal.
Chandratal means the lake of moon. This lake of beauty is set on a large meadow of edelweiss between a lower ridge and the main Kunzum range with an outlet in to Chandra river. A beautiful view of the Samudra Tapoo glacier and of mulkila range is obtainable. O/N Camp near by Chandratal lake side.
After breakfast we start trek to Tokpo Yonma. O/N camp at Yonma.
After breakfast we start trek to Congma. O/N Camp at Congma
Early start recommended after Baralacha we drive back to Zispa by Jeep. O/N Stay at Camp at Zispa.
After breakfast we drive back to Manali by jeep. Lunch enroute. On evening we reach Manali. O/N Manali.
Transport Options (Delhi – Mcleod ganj – Delhi)
For travel to Mcleod ganj and back one can choose between air, rail & road. For air travel, the closest airport is the Gaggal DHM, also known as Kangra Airport, or Dharamshala Airport and is well connected to Delhi and other parts of the country by Indigo, Alliance Air , Spice Jet.
There are frequent Public Transport buses including Volvos available from Delhi to Mcleodganj that cost about Rs. 1200- 1500 per person. These buses depart from Majnu ka tilla every 30 mins. or so and take about 12 hrs to cover the distance. The same is also applicable on the return journey. A private vehicle could also be arranged for if you require the same.
Weather Details
Summer in Mcleod ganj extends from March to June when the temperature variation is recorded to be ranging between 23°c and 27°c. Mercury sometimes reaches up to 38°c but never goes beyond that. During winters the temperature can drop to -1° and the maximum temperature hardly goes up to 20°c.

The Beas Kund Trek is rated as easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. The trail is well-marked with gradual ascents.
The ideal time is from mid-June to early September, when the snow has cleared and the weather is relatively stable. The rest of the year, the region remains snowbound and inaccessible.
Baralacha La sits at around 16,040 ft (4,890 m). Yes, acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. Spending a few days in Keylong, Manali, or Leh before starting the trek is highly recommended.
It is considered a moderate to difficult trek due to the high altitude and harsh weather conditions. Trekkers should have good fitness levels and preferably some prior experience with high-altitude treks.
Yes, permits are usually required, especially if the trek crosses over into Ladakh or protected forest areas. It's best to check with local authorities or tour organizers before planning.
It’s not ideal for absolute beginners. Due to the high altitude, remote location, and rugged terrain, it is best suited for those who have completed at least one or two Himalayan treks before.
